Compare strings in bash

Use the = operator with the test [ command

if [ "$VAR1" = "$VAR2" ]; then
    echo "Strings are equal."
else
    echo "Strings are not equal."
fi

Use the == operator with the [[ command:

if [[ "$VAR1" == "$VAR2" ]]; then
    echo "Strings are equal."
else
    echo "Strings are not equal."
fi
