By running tmux with no arguments, you create a brand new unit called session. A session can have one or more windows, A window can be broken in one or more panels. It is possible to run the programs in the background after you quit active session.
It may be useful to think of a tmux session as a login on your computer: where you can run one or more programs, where each program has it's own window with it's state.
